Fish River Canyon
Namibia’s Grand Natural Wonder
The Fish River Canyon, located in southern Namibia, is one of the most impressive natural attractions in the country—and the second-largest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon. Carved over millions of years by the Fish River, the canyon stretches for about 160 kilometers, reaches depths of up to 550 meters, and spans up to 27 kilometers in width. Its sheer scale, rugged terrain, and dramatic geological formations make it a breathtaking destination for nature lovers, hikers, and photographers alike.
The best-known viewpoint is near Hobas, where visitors can enjoy panoramic vistas over the canyon’s vast expanse. The play of light and shadow at sunrise and sunset reveals the full majesty of this natural marvel. There are several designated viewpoints along the rim, accessible by car, each offering different perspectives of the landscape.
For adventurous travelers, the Fish River Canyon Hiking Trail is one of Africa’s most famous multi-day hikes. The trail covers about 85 kilometers and takes 4 to 5 days to complete, leading hikers through the depths of the canyon along the riverbed. The route is challenging and only open during the cooler months from May to September, as temperatures in summer can be extreme. Hikers must register in advance, and a good level of fitness is required.
For those preferring a more relaxed experience, nearby lodges and camps offer day excursions, scenic flights, and sunset tours. Wildlife in the area includes mountain zebra, kudu, baboons, and a variety of bird species. While the region is arid and remote, the solitude and silence of the canyon make it a truly immersive and memorable experience.
The Fish River Canyon is accessible by car, with the nearest towns being Keetmanshoop and Ai-Ais. The Ai-Ais Hot Springs Resort, located at the southern end of the canyon, provides a perfect spot for relaxation after a long hike, with natural thermal baths and comfortable accommodation.
Whether for epic hiking or awe-inspiring views, the Fish River Canyon is a must-visit destination in Namibia—a powerful testament to the raw beauty and ancient forces that have shaped this land.
