Fish River Canyon

The Fish River Canyon, located in southern Namibia, is one of the most impressive natural attractions in the country—and the second-largest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon. Carved over millions of years by the Fish River, the canyon stretches for about 160 kilometers, reaches depths of up to 550 meters, and spans up to 27 kilometers in width. The trail covers about 85 kilometers and takes 4 to 5 days to complete, leading hikers through the depths of the canyon along the riverbed. The route is challenging and only open during the cooler months from May to September, as temperatures in summer can be extreme. Hikers must register in advance, and a good level of fitness is required.

For those preferring a more relaxed experience, nearby lodges and camps offer day excursions, scenic flights, and sunset tours. Wildlife in the area includes mountain zebra, kudu, baboons, and a variety of bird species. While the region is arid and remote, the solitude and silence of the canyon make it a truly immersive and memorable experience.

The Fish River Canyon is accessible by car, with the nearest towns being Keetmanshoop and Ai-Ais. The Ai-Ais Hot Springs Resort, located at the southern end of the canyon, provides a perfect spot for relaxation after a long hike, with natural thermal baths and comfortable accommodation.
