Windhoek International Airport

Hosea Kutako International Airport, Windhoek’s main international airport, sits about 45 km east of the city, so self-drive travellers should think carefully about where to collect their rental car. Hiring directly at the airport is the most convenient option: you can land, clear formalities, collect your vehicle and start the journey without arranging a separate transfer. The airport has car rental facilities, parking, restaurants, bureau de change, tax refund facilities and airport shuttles, making it well set up for arrivals.

The downside is that many visitors arrive tired after a long-haul flight, and Namibia’s distances, gravel roads and left-hand driving can make it unwise to begin a long drive immediately. Airport pickup can also mean less time for a detailed vehicle handover, shopping for supplies, buying a local SIM card, checking camping equipment, or calmly inspecting tyres, spare wheels and paperwork.

Taking a shuttle or taxi into Windhoek first is often the more relaxed option, especially for first-time visitors. It allows you to spend the first night in the capital, recover from the flight, stock up at supermarkets, and collect the car the next morning from a city depot. Some rental companies also offer airport-to-city transfers or include transfers as part of their service, which can make this option easier than it sounds.

The trade-off is time and cost: you need to arrange and pay for the transfer, and you may have to navigate city traffic when you finally collect the car. For confident travellers with an early arrival and a short first drive, airport pickup works well. For those starting a longer self-drive safari, especially with a 4x4 or camping vehicle, collecting in Windhoek after a restful first night is often the safer and more comfortable choice.
