Kavango

Kavango is a very worthwhile addition to a Namibia itinerary for travelers who want to experience a greener, more river-based side of the country. In tourism terms, Kavango generally refers to the Okavango River corridor from around Nkurenkuru and Rundu east to Divundu and Mohembo, rather than just the administrative regions. Namibia Tourism Board presents the Kavango Open Africa Route as a 383 km journey built around river landscapes, birds, wildlife, and local culture, and suggests allowing roughly 1½ to 3 days for the route.

What makes Kavango attractive is its atmosphere. After Namibia’s deserts, dunes, and dry mountain scenery, the Okavango feels unexpectedly lush and relaxed. The area is especially appealing for travelers who enjoy river lodges, boat cruises, birdwatching, fishing, canoeing, and quiet sunset views over the water. Official tourism sources describe the wider Okavango area as one of Namibia’s “refreshing water worlds,” and the Four Rivers tourism material highlights it as a renowned birding hotspot with a strong cultural dimension as well.

For most visitors, the main highlights are around Divundu and the eastern part of the route. Popa Falls is one of the best-known stops, though it is better understood as a wide series of rapids than as a dramatic vertical waterfall; Namibia’s tourism material notes that the river drops about 4 metres across a width of roughly 1.2 km before entering Botswana. Nearby, the Mahango Core Area of Bwabwata National Park is one of the region’s strongest reasons to stay longer, with good day-game-viewing potential and especially good birding. Official sources note that the dry season from June to October is best for game viewing, while November to March is stronger for birdwatching. Bwabwata is also known for elephant, buffalo, hippo, red lechwe, sitatunga, and a notable range of bird species.

Kavango also offers cultural interest, with attractions such as the Mbunza Living Museum and historic mission stations along the river. For itinerary planning, it works very well as a one- to two-night stop, or longer if you want river activities and wildlife, especially on the way toward Zambezi, Botswana, or Victoria Falls. Travelers focused only on Namibia’s classic desert icons may find it less essential, but for anyone who wants a softer, greener, and more varied side of the country, Kavango is an excellent choice.
